James Farmer describes the sight of finding a multitude of dead fish in his stock pond following a heavy rain in 2022 in Johnson County. The sight of the “fish kill” started an investigation that involved the testing of water, soil and animals from the farmers’ land and found the presence of forever chemicals in large numbers. Johnson County commissioners issued a disaster declaration in February of 2025.

Like many properties in Kings County, Younger’s home was expected to flood from the overflowing Mississippi River. The Mississippi River floods during April and May of 2011 caused river and tributary levels to rise to record levels.
